The renovation and seismic rehabilitation of the Pasadena Macy’s store gracefully combined new displays and technology into a historic interior. Originally a Bullocks store designed by Welton Becket in 1947, over time many of the classic historic details were paneled over and hidden. Many of these classic elements have now been revealed and restored. A major structural seismic upgrade was required. Given the challenging schedule a 3 dimensional BIM (Building Information Modeling) program was used for both design and construction to minimize schedule delays due to design discrepancies and field change orders. In only six months the existing foundation was accessed, temporary support constructed, foundations built, new vertical shear walls introduced throughout the building, and finishes were repaired and restored.
