Cal State Long Beach’s new 126,000 SF Recreation and Wellness Center is designed to be more than just a place to exercise. The various programmatic elements, design features, indoor outdoor relationships and orchestration of space work together to create a place where people will build friendships, exchange ideas and help one another. Amenities include a 20,000 SF cardio/fitness center, rock-climbing wall, three-court gymnasium, multi-activity courts, multipurpose rooms, racquetball courts, wellness center, staff offices, running track, sand volleyball courts, recreation pool and spa, and a snack/juice bar. Located on one of the largest and most urban CSU college campuses, the construction team had to address challenges relating to phasing, communication, staging and safety. Sustainable strategies employed on this project that contribute to its LEED Gold Certification include daylight, lighting controls, recycled building materials, water reclamation for irrigation, waterless urinals and new technology, such as biometric scanners, to decrease paper waste and save on utility expenses.
