The new, design-build, two-story Chemistry and Biotechnology Building will provide a state-of-the-art science facility for 21st-century learning science environments. This two-building complex is located in one of the most populated circulation paths on the campus. One building will house four Chemistry Labs and four Biotech Labs, while the other includes two 40-person, flexible classrooms. In the 25,000 SF complex, 13,500 SF will be designated for Chemistry, and 11,600 SF will be used for Biotechnology.
The project also includes a STEM Quad Porch with plentiful shade, wifi connectivity, and convenient power access that create an outstanding outdoor learning environment for the students and faculty. There is a two-level covered entry court that serves both as an exterior lobby for the Chemistry Biotech building and as a shaded exterior space for the larger STEM community. This covered space connects to key paths around its perimeter. This porch is also ideal for gatherings of various sizes and compositions, including donor events. The orientation of the porch is ideal for wind and sun protection, as the building is designed to meet LEED Silver certification.
The building works as a focal point for passing students; the inviting shade structure will pull students in to collaborate in a place where science will truly be on display. This project is a ‘Hero Destination’ hub which addresses the present but points to the future.
