Designed for functionality and flexibility, this 70,663 SF field house is a joint-use complex shared by the City of San Diego and Miramar College. The complex consists of five buildings constructed of steel, masonry and concrete. To develop the program, the architect worked with representatives from the College, the Parks and Recreation department and the community for more than eight years. Both College and City functions will take place in this dynamic complex. While spaces for each user group are designated in the new facility, the building is choreographed to encourage co-mingling between user groups. The gymnasium, for example, can be divided by a retractable curtain enabling it to accommodate performances, ceremonies, and other College and City functions. The complex was designed to achieve LEED Certification and green elements to maintain healthier spaces for users and minimize external environmental impacts are integrated in every aspect of the project.
