An innovative tilt-up concrete wall system combined with a floor to ceiling glass façade on the Northeast elevation enabled the C.W. Driver/Gensler team to design and construct an iconic office building for the UCSD Health Sciences and Medical Center. This creative use of simple materials and construction techniques resulted in a 16 month on schedule, within budget delivery. In addition to creating a new gateway to the Medical Campus, the ECOB consolidates researchers and associated staff into a single 75,000 SF three-story office building with offices, meeting space, a non-OSHPD CTRI clinic (Clinical and Translational Research Institute), and a café. Features such as variable air volume air-handlers connected to the central chilled water plant, a light colored cool roof membrane, natural light, punched windows on southern elevations, and a large exterior shade canopy enable the building to exceed California Code by 16% and a LEED Silver certification.
